7 Areas of Your Office You're Forgetting to Clean

An office has many different areas that need to be cleaned. From desks and kitchen worktops to glass partitions and windows, there are some very obvious aspects of an office that need to be cleaned. Despite this, there are actually a few areas that you’re forgetting to clean in and around your office.

It can be difficult, as a business owner, to find the time to meticulously clean your workspace, which is why many companies opt for professional cleaning services. Here at Upbeat Clean, our highly-skilled, fully-trained commercial cleaners are able to clean your office from top to bottom, leaving no stone unturned. Having said that, here are seven things in your office that you’re forgetting to clean:

1. Light fixtures

A common tactic when it comes to cleaning any area is starting from top to bottom, and this should include all of your light fixtures and fittings. It can be easy to neglect those areas of your office as they often go unnoticed, but it’s a magnet for dust and debris to settle in. Something else to consider is that dusty light fittings could become a fire hazard.

You should also maintain your fluorescent lights. Not only does this create a healthier, cleaner workplace environment, but you might also find that your space becomes lighter having removed a film of dirt from your lightbulbs, as well as their fixtures and fittings.

2. Air ducts, air vents & air conditioning units

Most offices will have an air conditioning system installed, but almost all of them will have air ducts and air vents present as a safety measure. Much like your light fixtures and fittings, air conditioning units, air vents and air ducts provide the perfect environment for dust and dirt to gather and settle.

The issue with dust and dirt buildup in the aforementioned items is that, because air regularly passes through them, and often directly into the office, this could cause a health hazard to your employees as there’s a possibility that they’ll be breathing in dust particles as they work. Make sure you pay attention to the dust buildup on air ducts, air vents and air conditioning and replace filters as and when needed.

3. Desk telephones

Telephones are one of the most used pieces of equipment in the office, which makes them incredibly dirty. Despite being a popular device in the office, they’re often the most forgotten-about when it comes to cleaning the office. It’s important that, given how many times the phone is handled throughout the working day, the handset and keypad are disinfected at the end of the day.

Not only is it important that you disinfect the phone because you’ll be touching it regularly, it will also be in extremely close proximity to your face, which can pose a health risk to employees. In addition to that, some office phones have ducts on them, which, as already discussed, collects dust. Make sure your office phones are clean, and not just the desk it sits on.

4. Computers & computing accessories

Computer towers and monitors are often forgotten about when it comes to cleaning the office, as well as the accessories needed to operate the system, such as a keyboard and computer mouse. Much like a telephone handset and keypad, these are items that you’ll touch and handle the most at work, so it’s the perfect place to harbour bacteria, especially if left uncleaned. Make sure you disinfect computing accessories, together with any buttons on computer towers and monitors, to ensure you’re not being exposed to harmful bacteria that could make yourself, your colleagues or even those at home, poorly.

5. Office chairs

Despite being something we use everyday in the office, sometimes without thinking, your office chair provides the best conditions for bacteria to live. Not only have you got to think about the cleanliness of your armrests and positioning lever (the lever under your chair that dictates the height of your chair), but you also have to consider the parts and components that sit closest to the floor.

There are also several nooks and crannies present on an office chair where bacteria and dust can settle. You’ll need to use the right equipment to access those crevices, so look to a reputable commercial cleaning company, such as us here at Upbeat Clean, who will have the tools needed to be able to eradicate dirt and dust from your office chairs as part of your office cleaning service in Derby.

6. The kitchen & break room areas

The kitchen needs a little more cleaning than just wiping down worktops and making sure cutlery and crockery is clean and ready to use, likewise with break rooms, canteens and communal areas. Most kitchens and break rooms are a breeding ground for bacteria, especially thanks to their increased levels of moisture and general activity.

Not only do you need to clean the worktops, but also any door handles and knobs to doors and cupboards. You will also need to check that the interior of the cupboards are clean and that the fridge and/or freezer is also clean and free from food debris. The microwave, kettle, toasters and even coffee machines will need attention as well.

Essentially, all food preparation and eating areas need to be hygienic and adequate in terms of cleanliness. This ensures the health of your employees as well as maintains the integrity of your appliances, furniture and kitchen itself.

7. Window coverings

Blinds and curtains are something that are often neglected when it comes to office cleaning, even in the domestic home. While most offices will opt for simple vertical blinds, other offices might choose netting to cover their windows or even curtains, depending on the setting or industry you work in.

It can be easy to forget about making sure those are clean, but they’re a magnet for dust and dirt and sit. Every time those window coverings are moved, the dust is disturbed and released into the air for people to breathe in. Make sure you clean your window dressings to avoid this.
